How to Play a
RAFFHAAR Shell Horn | Ritual Conch Guide

In this video, I show you how to breathe life into a RAFFHAAR conch horn: natural, raw, and crafted with care.

Unlike traditional conch shells, RAFFHAAR horns are fitted with a hand-shaped clay mouthpiece. This makes playing easier, more comfortable, and allows for better tone control – even if you’ve never blown a shell before.

You’ll learn:

How to position your lips on the mouthpiece

The difference between breathing and "buzzing"

How to create steady tones with minimal effort

And how to feel your way into sound, rather than forcing it

A little introduction to circular breathing

How Does a Conch Horn Work?

For thousands of years, sea shell trumpets have been used in rituals, ceremonies and as signal horns across the world. From the Triton shell of the Greeks to the Shankha in India, these ancestral instruments connect us to the elements, to breath, and to ancient forms of communication. At RAFFHAAR, each conch horn is carefully sculpted and fitted with a custom mouthpiece to make it fully playable, no longer just decorative, but truly resonant and functional.

The Principle Behind a Conch Horn

A conch horn works in a similar way to a trumpet or bugle:
🔸 You blow into a mouthpiece (or directly into the shell opening)
🔸 Your lips vibrate, creating a column of vibrating air inside the shell
🔸 This air resonates through the spiral, producing a deep, rich tone

By adjusting your embouchure (lip tension and shape), you can even produce different notes or octaves, especially on shells with the right dimensions and craftsmanship.

Some RAFFHAAR shells include a tone hole or even multiple finger holes, allowing for more variation in pitch, transforming the conch into a multi-tone ritual horn.

Why Use a Conch Horn?

Conch horns are powerful tools for:

  • Ritual openings

  • Sound healing and breathwork

  • Calling attention or setting space

  • Connecting with natural, ancestral frequencies

  • Just for fun between friends

  • Ceremonies

  • Manifestations

  • ...

Each shell has its own base frequency, usually between 280–450 Hz, making it ideal for grounding and energetic work.
